PRESENTED BY: Rockefeller University, Science Education Initiative, Science & the City (a program of the New York Academy of Sciences), and Polytechnic Institute of New York University
DESCRIPTION:
The United States is falling behind when it comes to science education. The current standards on which K12 science curricula are built are inconsistent across the states, and often very vague, leaving many teachers without the appropriate guidance. To address these issues, many states, including NY, have joined forces to come up with a set of voluntary standards intended to significantly improve how science is presented and taught to students. The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), which are based on the National Research Council's Framework for K-12 Education, will be ready for state adoption this winter. Will scientists and educators be ready? At this event, we will provide many opportunities to discuss the different facets of NGSS, as well as highlight innovative ways to bring science into the classroom. The ultimate goal is to improve the dialogue between educators and scientists in order to help best prepare our future generations and improve science literacy in the US.

Breakout Session 2: Teachers and Principals Update on the NGSS
Breakout Session 3: Teaching Critical Thinking Outside the Science Classroom
