Range Rover-Exposed at the LA Auto Show

The all-new Range Rover has lost nearly a half ton in weight compared to the outgoing model. But to prove that its underpinnings are no less stout, they stripped one naked to showcase the hard parts. The blue tube above the front tire is part of the engine's air intake system-designed for extreme water fording.

'East Coast Rapist' Aaron Thomas Pleads Guilty To Virginia Attack And Abduction

LEESBURG, Va. -- A Connecticut man who police believe is responsible for a series of sexual assaults along the East Coast pleaded guilty Thursday to a 2001 rape and abduction in Virginia, marking the first conviction in the attacks spanning more than a decade.

Aaron Thomas of New Haven faces two potential life sentences after he entered the guilty pleas in Loudoun County Circuit Court to one count of rape and one of abduction with intent to defile.

Thomas had been scheduled to enter a guilty plea earlier this month in Prince William County for raping two teenage trick-or-treaters on Halloween 2009, but the deal fell through after Thomas told a judge he didn't know what he was doing.

Thursday's hearing faced road bumps of its own, when a teary, shackled Thomas cried out "I don't know what's going on here and I don't know what I'm doing" in response to a judge's question about the plea. But he ultimately accepted responsibility, pleading guilty in a barely audible voice. A third, lesser count was dropped as part of the plea deal.

Thomas underwent a mental health evaluation after being transferred to Virginia to face charges. A court-appointed evaluator concluded he was faking symptoms of insanity.

Part of the evidence against Thomas included a letter of apology he wrote shortly after his arrest last year to the woman he raped in Leesburg, threatening her with a screwdriver.

In the letter, written after he was interviewed by detectives, Thomas wrote "I did not want to hurt you I just have a bad emotional sex problem that I could not control (sic)." He concluded, "Sorry 4 hurting you emtionaley (sic) because I have problems with my self."

Thursday's guilty plea was the first conviction in any of the cases linked to the man police dubbed the East Coast Rapist. He is scheduled for a second plea hearing Friday in Prince William County.

Loudoun County Commonwealth's Attorney Jim Plowman said he was glad that the guilty plea would spare the victim from having to testify at a trial. She will be able to testify at Thomas' sentencing about the effect the crime has had on her life.

Plowman declined to say Thursday whether he will seek a life sentence.

Thomas was arrested in Connecticut in March 2011 after a multi-state law enforcement effort to catch a man believed responsible for rapes and other attacks on 17 women since 1997 in Maryland, Virginia, Connecticut and Rhode Island.

The cases were linked by DNA and other evidence.

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? The United Nations voted overwhelmingly Thursday to recognize a Palestinian state, a long-sought victory for the Palestinians and an embarrassing diplomatic defeat for the United States.

The resolution upgrading the Palestinians' status to a nonmember observer state at the U.N. was approved by a vote of 138-9, with 41 abstentions, in the 193-member world body.

A Palestinian flag was quickly unfurled on the floor of the General Assembly, behind the Palestinian delegation. In the West Bank city of Ramallah, hundreds crowded into the main square waved Palestinian flags and chanted "God is great." Others who had watched the vote on outdoor screens and television sets hugged, honked and set off fireworks before dancing in the streets.

Real independence, however, remains an elusive dream until the Palestinians negotiate a peace deal with the Israelis, who warned that the General Assembly action will only delay a lasting solution. Israel still controls the West Bank, east Jerusalem and access to Gaza, and it accused the Palestinians of bypassing negotiations with the campaign to upgrade their U.N. status.

The Palestinians still face enormous limitations. They don't control their borders, airspace or trade, they have separate and competing governments in Gaza and the West Bank and they have no unified army or police.

The United States immediately criticized the historic vote. "Today's unfortunate and counterproductive resolution places further obstacles in the path peace," U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice said. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton called the vote "unfortunate" and "counterproductive."

The United States and Israel voted against recognition, joined by Canada, the Czech Republic, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau and Panama.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the speech by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to the General Assembly shortly before the vote "defamatory and venomous," saying it was "full of mendacious propaganda" against Israel. Netanyahu called the vote meaningless.

Abbas had told the General Assembly that it was "being asked today to issue the birth certificate of Palestine." Abbas said the vote is the last chance to save the two-state solution.

After the vote, Netanyahu said the U.N. move violated past agreements between Israel and the Palestinians and that Israel would act accordingly, without elaborating what steps it might take.

Thursday's vote came on the same day, Nov. 29, that the U.N. General Assembly in 1947 voted to recognize a partitioned state in Palestine, with the jubilant revelers then Jews. The Palestinians rejected that partition plan, and decades of tension and violence followed.

Just before Thursday's vote, Israel's U.N. ambassador, Ron Prosor, warned the General Assembly that "the Palestinians are turning their backs on peace" and that the U.N. can't break the 4,000-year-old bond between the people of Israel and the land of Israel.

The vote had been certain to succeed, with most member states sympathetic to the Palestinians. Several key countries, including France, this week announced they would support the move to elevate the Palestinians from the status of U.N. observer to nonmember observer state.

Unlike the more powerful U.N. Security Council, there are no vetoes in the General Assembly, and the resolution to raise the Palestinian status only required a majority vote for approval.

The vote grants Abbas an overwhelming international endorsement for his key position: establishment of a Palestinian state in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem, the territories captured by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war. With Netanyahu opposed to a pullback to the 1967 lines, this should strengthen Abbas' hand if peace talks resume.

The overwhelming vote also could help Abbas restore some of his standing, which has been eroded by years of standstill in peace efforts. His rival, Hamas, deeply entrenched in Gaza, has seen its popularity rise after an Israeli offensive on targets linked to the Islamic militant group there earlier this month.

Israel has stepped back from initial threats of harsh retaliation for the Palestinians seeking U.N. recognition, but government officials warned that Israel would respond to any Palestinian attempts to use the upgraded status to confront Israel in international bodies.

The Palestinians now can gain access to U.N. agencies and international bodies, most significantly the International Criminal Court, which could become a springboard for going after Israel for alleged war crimes or its ongoing settlement building on war-won land.

However, in the run-up to the U.N. vote, Abbas signaled that he wants recognition to give him leverage in future talks with Israel, and not as a tool for confronting or delegitimizing Israel, as Israeli leaders have alleged.

MANILA, Philippines ? Thirteen organizations whose nominees come from the same families have been accredited for next year?s party-list polls, according to the complete list released by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Thursday, November 29.

They include Ang Mata'y Alagaan (AMA), whose first 3 nominees upon application are members of Supreme Court Justice Presbitero Velasco Jr?s family. Also on the list is Ako Ang Batang Sora Movement, Inc. (ABSI), which counts 3 relatives of Quezon City congresswoman Mary Ann Susano among the 5 nominees each group is allowed to have.

For the 2013, the party list has become a sort of family affair for 36 of the 289 groups that applied for inclusion (165 new applicants, 124 accredited in 2010). Each of these 38 have 2-3 nominees who are related to each other.

Organizations applying for accreditation for the party list have to nominate 5 persons each to represent them. For every corresponding percentage of votes that the group garners, it can send to the House of Representatives the nominees who are first on the list.

AMA?s Nominees 1-3 were Justice Velasco?s wife Lorna and children Tricia Nicole and Vincent Michael. The poll body said earlier the group had replaced the Velascos as nominees, although it wasn?t clear when the substitution was made and who replaced them.

ABSI has Congresswoman Susano?s nieces Vanessa Rose and Maricel Francisco as first and fourth nominees, and her nephew Michael Ryan Francisco as fifth nominee.

Eleven other groups, each with two related nominees, have been accredited by the Comelec for the 2013 party list. They are:

  • Agrarian Development Association (ADA) ? Former Ilocos Sur Rep. Eric D. Singson and his son, incumbent Ilocos Sur Rep. Eric G. Singson Jr.
  • Agbiag! Timpuyog Ilocano Inc. (AGBIAG) ? Patricio T. Antonio and Jose Antonieto M. Antonio.
  • Agila ng Katutubong Pilipino, Inc. (AGILA) ? Gil A. Valera and Elorde B. Valera.
  • Ang Laban ng Indiginong Filipino (ALIF) ? Current ALIF Rep. Acmad Tomawis?s sons Abdul (his political liaison officer) and Agakhan.
  • Angkla: Ang Partido ng mga Pilipinong Marino, Inc. (ANGKLA) ? Jesulito A. Manalo and Jose Miguel S. Manalo.
  • Bagong Henerasyon (BH) ? Incumbent BH Rep. Bernadette Cruz-Herrera Dy and her husband Edgar Allan D. Dy.
  • Trade Union Congress Party (TUCP) ? Incumbent TUCP Rep. Raymond Democrito C. Mendoza and his brother Michael Democrito. They are sons of TUCP president Democrito Mendoza.
  • 1 Alliance Advocating Autonomy Party (1 AAA Party) ? Former Department of Transportation and Communications secretary and Davao del Norte Rep. Pantaleon D. Alvarez and Alfonso A. Alvarez.
  • Aasenso Sa Barangay - LAKAS Inc. (ASBI-LAKAN) ? Hermin E. Arceo and Ariel S. Arceo.
  • OFW Family Club, Inc. (OFW FAMILY) ? Former ambassador and National Labor Relations Comission chair Roy V. Se?eres Sr. and his son Roy M. Se?eres Jr.
  • Padayon Pilipino (PADAYON PILIPINO) - Vladimir R. Elazequi and Natasha E. Elazequi.

Twenty-three other groups with 2-3 related nominees were already disqualified by Comelec.

They include the Alliance of Organizations, Networks, and Associations of the Philippines (ALONA), whose nominees are House Minority Leader and Quezon Rep. Danilo Suarez?s children Danilo Jr. and Joanna, and in-law Alexis.

Also disqualified was the National Crusaders for Peace and Democracy Inc. (NCPD), whose nominees include retired police general Romeo Maganto and his children Faith and Rommel.

Comelec Resolution 9366, or the rules and regulations governing the 2013 partylist elections, does not specifically state that having relatives as nominees of a single party is a basis for disqualification.

Having a single family as source for a number of nominees, however, tends to go against the main criteria that a group has to represent and to have nominees belonging to marginalized sectors.

The Comelec on Thursday released a list of 79 accredited groups for the 2013 party-list race. ? Rappler.com

In Self DefenseIn Self Defense is inspired by the true-life story of a martial arts legend who died at the hand of his own son. After fighting in the jungles of the South Pacific in World War II, Willy Wetzel and his family migrated from Indonesia to America in 1956. Willy opened one of the first martial arts schools in the United States in Beaver County, Pennsylvania. He was a pioneer and became known worldwide for his mastery of many martial arts forms. The finest pupil Willy ever taught, was his second son, Roy Wetzel. The Wetzels all had their battle scars, some more visible than others. When Roy returned from Viet Nam with a Purple Heart, he hoped for a peaceful life at home. Instead Roy found himself in a fight with his father. One fateful night, their strained relationship finally came to a head. As Roy's young daughter lay asleep in the next room, a weapon-filled brutal fight between father and son ensued. The aftermath of Willy's last skirmish would leave Roy bloody and beaten and charged by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania with Murder. This led to a controversial trial and the original court transcripts contained in the second half of this non-fiction novel give a compelling account of the prolonged legal contest that stirred up many debates. Following the lives of the Wetzels in intricate detail, In Self Defense will keep you turning the page till the very end. Bacteria hijack host cell process, create their own food supply to become infectious

ScienceDaily (Nov. 29, 2012) ? Bacteria that cause the tick-borne disease anaplasmosis in humans create their own food supply by hijacking a process in host cells that normally should help kill the pathogenic bugs, scientists have found.

This bacterium, Anaplasma phagocytophilum (Ap), secretes a protein that can start this process. The protein binds with another protein produced by white blood cells, and that connection creates compartments that siphon host-cell nutrients to feed the bacteria, enabling their growth inside the white blood cells.

The finding defies conventional wisdom about most bacteria, which try to avoid this cellular process. Called autophagy, the process allows a cell to digest parts of itself to produce energy when it is experiencing starvation. But that digestive feature also is enacted by the immune system to help clear away certain intracellular pathogens, including those that cause salmonellosis or shigellosis.

The Ap bacterium, however, launches and then manipulates the autophagy process to its own advantage.

"This study shows how bacteria subvert natural processes," said Yasuko Rikihisa, professor of veterinary biosciences at Ohio State University and lead author of the research. "They are creating their own food supply through a cellular mechanism that hurts other infectious bacteria. And because this process doesn't cause inflammation, they do it very gently, becoming an insider that eventually kills the host cell."

The finding could help identify new targets for drugs to treat this infection, which is a rare but emerging infectious disease that can be lethal for the elderly and people with compromised immune systems. The current first-line treatment is the antibiotic doxycycline.

Also known as human granulocytic anaplasmosis, the disease affects more than 1,000 people per year in the United States, up from just 348 reported cases in 2003, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It is transmitted to humans by tick bites primarily from the black-legged tick and the western black-legged tick.

The study appears online this week in the early edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The Ap bacterium secretes substances to perform a process resembling mating to infect host cells, primarily the granulocyte class of white blood cells that fight off invading pathogens. Rikihisa's lab previously identified a protein called Ats-1 that is secreted by Ap bacteria during this process.

In this new study, the researchers found that once inside the host cells, Ats-1 binds to another protein called Beclin 1, which is part of a system of molecules involved in the earliest stages of the autophagy process.

The scientists observed that when the two proteins bind, they create little bubbles known as vesicles. Through a series of experiments, the researchers determined that these bubbles were in fact autophagosomes -- bubble-like compartments that are formed as a cell prepares to undergo autophagy.

They were able to confirm this by imaging the vesicles to determine that they had the tell-tale double membrane characteristic of autophagosomes, and by testing for the presence of other compounds that serve as markers of the initiation of the cell-digesting process.

Under normal circumstances, autophagosomes contain the nutrients that are meant to be digested and recycled for other uses -- but in this case, the bacteria take those nutrients to promote their own growth.

That Ats-1 could start this process on its own represents a rare power for a single protein.

"We believe this is the first bacterial protein that has been found to do this," said Rikihisa, also an investigator in Ohio State's Center for Microbial Interface Biology and Comprehensive Cancer Center. "Ats-1 initiates an early stage of the autophagosome, then picks up nutrients from the main body of the host cell and closes the layers."

Most of the action of bacterial growth takes place inside a special compartment that typically doesn't contain many nutrients. But after the Ap bacterial protein starts this process of producing autophagosomes that can encase nutrients, these bubbles fuse with the compartment, creating a steady supply of food at the site of bacterial replication and growth.

The researchers showed this by further imaging the bubbles to determine that an autophagy marker protein could be found both inside and outside of the bacterial growth compartments. They also showed that infected cells did not contain any lysosomes, which are cell parts that perform the actual digestion and degradation of foreign bodies during autophagy.

An experiment in mice deficient in the Beclin 1 protein showed that infection levels were much lower if mice had low levels of this protein -- confirming its role in binding with Ats-1 and producing autophagosomes to promote infection. In cell cultures, the researchers also showed that when Ats-1 was overproduced, bacteria grew 10 times more effectively than they did in cells in which an unrelated protein was overproduced.

All of this activity allows the bacteria to remain hidden from the immune system because the induction of autophagy is considered a normal cell function and it does not produce any inflammation, which would recruit infection-fighters to the scene. Instead, the Ap bacteria set themselves up comfortably inside granulocytes and steadily grow for a few days until they rupture their host cells and generate a strong immune response -- which makes an infected person sick.

In one final experiment, Rikihisa and colleagues blocked autophagosome production in Ap-infected cells using an experimental drug called 3-MA. With that process blocked, bacterial growth declined dramatically.

3-MA is toxic to humans, but its effectiveness in blocking the infectious properties of Ap in cells suggests that its structure could serve as the basis for a safe small-molecule drug, Rikihisa said.

"A similar compound could be a potential treatment to inhibit bacterial growth," she said.

Clarifying the power of Ats-1 in inducing autophagy also suggests that this protein could be an important tool in further studies of this complex cell process that remains poorly understood, she added.

This work was supported by a grant from the National Institutes of Health.

F-Droid is the FOSS application store for your Android phone

F-Droid

One of the cool things about Android is the open market model. The folks at Google don't mind at all if you sideload apps, or use your phone to build apps of your own, or even if you install a whole separate application market. That's the real meaning of open when you hear the word being tossed around so freely. Because the platform is open, we get to see things like F-Droid.

F-Droid is a third party application "store" that hosts FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) in a repository for easy installation and updating. The repo is full of open-source software written under a variety of licenses, but all nice and FOSSy enough to please most any die-hard fan.

Having it laid out all nicely this way offers a few benefits as well. You can choose which version of an app to install, track which FOSS apps you have installed, and turn on update notifications right in the app settings. It's an excellent way to manage things, and closely mimics software repos from popular desktop Linux distributions. Even the F-Droid app itself is FOSS and licensed under the GPLv2+.

Of course we can't mention any third party application centers without thinking of security. F-Droid tackles this in a pretty novel way. Developers can upload a pre-built apk file, but the preferred way is to upload the source. F-Droid then builds an signs the code, creating an apk file they guarantee is 100% derived from the source code anyone can look through. Community oversight has long been a staple of the FOSS world, and when source is readily available you'll find that very few shenanigans are tried. The guys and gal who can read the code will let everyone know if they find something shady. Everyone.

There's quite a few interesting apps in F-Droid, and I'm going to give it a spin. If you're a fan of FOSS, I recommend you do the same.

Hospital Infections: Simple Measures Go Long Way In Prevention

CHICAGO -- Preventing infections from surgery is a major concern for hospitals and it turns out some simple measures can make a big difference.

A project at seven big hospitals reduced infections after colorectal surgeries by nearly one-third. It prevented an estimated 135 infections, saving almost $4 million.

The measures included having patients shower with special germ-fighting soap before surgery, and having surgery teams change gowns, gloves and instruments during operations to prevent spreading germs picked up during the procedures.

Practices were standardized at the seven hospitals.

The Joint Commission hospital regulating group and the American College of Surgeons directed the project. They announced results on Wednesday.

Activists: Syrian rebels seize major dam in north

BEIRUT (AP) ? Activists say Syrian rebels have captured a hydroelectric dam on the Euphrates river in the country's north in a strategic victory that followed days of fighting.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says the Tishrin Dam, near the town of Manbij, fell to the rebels before dawn on Monday.

Rami Abdul-Rahman, who heads the Observatory, says the dam supplies several areas of Syria with electricity.

The rebels have been making strategic advances recently. On Sunday, they briefly captured a regime helicopter base outside Damascus.

Syria's conflict started in March 2011 as uprising against President Bashar Assad's regime, inspired by other Arab Spring revolts.

It quickly morphed into a civil war that has since killed more than 40,000 people, according to activists.

The Science of Cookware (and How It'll Help You Buy a Better Pan)The Science of Cookware (and How It'll Help You Buy a Better Pan) The folks at CHOW and Modernist Cuisine tested and developed software to test heat conduction through different types of pans so you don't have to, and the results are actually surprising. Before reaching for that expensive copper pan, think twice: a more affordable but thicker steel pan is a better buy.

Modernist Cuisine's Scott Heimendinger explains why above, but the lowdown is this: copper pans definitely transmit heat from the burner to your food faster, but when it comes to even cooking and maintaining regular heating without hot spots around your pan it's the thickness of your pan, not its material, that matters most. A thicker steel or aluminum pan will do a much better job than a copper one, which are usually thinner.

Scott goes on to explain the delicate dance between conduction (heat transfer from the burner to the pan) and convection (heat loss to the air) in the video above. He even offers up a bonus tip to keep your pan extra hot and even: Visit a metal shop and get a half-inch to 1 1/2 inch aluminum block to put over your burner. If that's too much for you, just reach for a thicker stainless steel or non-stick pan when you're shopping for yourself or for a gift and skip the copper ones. Your food will thank you.

Winning Solo Ezine Ad Campaigns | Start Your Own Business ...

It is smart marketing to have a diverse advertising portfolio, and that is exactly why you need to seriously look at ezine advertising. For so many years a certain percentage of marketers have known the value of traffic that can be had with this. This method uses a principle that is prevalent in other methods, leveraging, but it still does it in a unique way. Any time you run advertising, you must ensure you know what you are doing. So obviously your ads will have a better conversion rate if you attend to that fact. Aside from writing winning ads, you should know a few things about the process of using this particular vehicle which is the solo ezine ad campaign. We are willing to bet that if you took a poll asking how many web marketers run real optimization tests, the percentage would be shockingly low. That is most crucial when trying new techniques much like what you are reading today about visit this site. Well, one thing that is good news is if you have just arrived to internet marketing you can learn more about testing and have a leg up on many competitors.

It is all too easy to have a sense of excitement early on and want to get things going, but that can cause you to overlook small but important details. Therefore what you should consider is carefully rolling-out anything new you want to try. How ever you wish to design your tests, and in what manner of delivery is entirely your call.

The same with new tactics for your website or blog, perhaps try it on some of your pages but not all of them. No discussion about testing would be complete without mentioning how critical tracking is so you can have metrics to analyze.

Unfortunately we always have to remind people to make sure their ads evade the spam filter. It?s really easy to get blocked by the strong spam filters out there. If your ad has all the wrong words in it, then that will most likely be disastrous for your campaign; you will not be happy. If your ezine ad allows you to create a subject line, then the same consideration applies to that, as well. You should also scan through the body of your email to check if it?s fine. Avoiding problems is in the best interest of your company; not only that but you do want to make it. There are tons of place on the web that will check it for free.

The purpose of any ad in an email is to make a conversion, which is not a sale, it is the simple act of clicking the link in that email. Then your destination will need to take over from that point on, but it is your ad that also must logically flow into it. Giving people a reason to take some kind of action on the landing page is obviously a concern, as well.

When it comes to proper ad format, you will need to follow the direction of the ezine. All you need to do is follow the instructions given to you by the ezine, and that will work out just fine. Your ad will probably be sent in HTML format, so you will need to make sure it is coded right. Remember, too, that you are trusting the ezine owner when it comes to the quality of the list, etc. If you need help with actually writing a solid ad, then we recommend you learn copywriting principles. Getting the right kind of traffic is one of the biggest challenges for any online business. The advantage of ezine solo ads is that it?s possible to get high converting traffic in a short time. A well written ad in the best possible ezine is always a winning combination. Once you get these basics right, there?s absolutely no looking back. Compared to other forms of advertising, ezine ads can be very economical and profitable. What?s holding you back? Make plans to begin your next ezine solo ad campaign.

The Importance of Editing Film and TV Production - Bobby Bose ...

To the uninitiated, editing may look like a monotonous task that is both mentally as well as physically taxing.

In fact, the film editor has the job identical to a cook.

The importance of editing dates back ages, chronicled in the book "The Technique Of Film And Video Editing" by Ken Dancyger. It upholds some of the finest examples of editing imparting the narrative of the film through silent shots, music and jump shots involving ordinary objects. Alfred Hitchcock's filmmaking (in films like 'Vertigo' and 'The Man Who Knew Too Much') is considered to have some of the finest editing work by the erstwhile standards, and can easily exemplify why editing is considered so integral to the success of a film or TV production.

In the earlier ages, editing was physically done, with the help of mechanical equipment that sliced, spliced and appropriately put together 'linearly' edited reels. The digital revolution and technological advances like the Firewire have magically simplified the post-production process. With software applications like Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro and Windows Movie Maker, editing is not restricted to professionally trained editors and apprentices. The ease of use and interactive applications has made it possible for film students, amateurs and one-time users to edit their own film or video productions.

The advent of computers has also allowed editors to enhance the creativity of their work. Unlike the mechanical equipment which was used on the original reel and did not warrant a liberal creative license or room for error to the editor, digital editing offers a huge scope for improvisation. The latter has opened up avenues for experimentation, much better treatment and quick editing procedures. Off late, films have been centered on editing and the whole post-production process, rather than the filming of the same. Recent examples can include 'The Lord of the Rings Trilogy' and 'Avatar', the latter incidentally being the highest revenue-grossing films of all time!

With technology advancing in the speed of light-years, editing in film and TV production has gained a pivotal role. And every filmmaking unit, irrespective of size, style, location or budget, has already acknowledged the same!

Flexible, low-voltage circuits made using nanocrystals

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? Electronic circuits are typically integrated in rigid silicon wafers, but flexibility opens up a wide range of applications. In a world where electronics are becoming more pervasive, flexibility is a highly desirable trait, but finding materials with the right mix of performance and manufacturing cost remains a challenge.

Now a team of researchers from the University of Pennsylvania has shown that nanoscale particles, or nanocrystals, of the semiconductor cadmium selenide can be "printed" or "coated" on flexible plastics to form high-performance electronics.

The research was led by David Kim, a doctoral student in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering in Penn's School of Engineering and Applied Science; Yuming Lai, a doctoral student in the Engineering School's Department of Electrical and Systems Engineering; and professor Cherie Kagan, who has appointments in both departments as well as in the School of Arts and Sciences' Department of Chemistry. Benjamin Diroll, a doctoral student in chemistry, and Penn Integrates Knowledge Professor Christopher Murray of Materials Science and of Chemistry also collaborated on the research.

Their work was published in the journal Nature Communications.

"We have a performance benchmark in amorphous silicon, which is the material that runs the display in your laptop, among other devices," Kagan said. "Here, we show that these cadmium selenide nanocrystal devices can move electrons 22 times faster than in amorphous silicon."

Besides speed, another advantage cadmium selenide nanocrystals have over amorphous silicon is the temperature at which they are deposited. Whereas amorphous silicon uses a process that operates at several hundred degrees, cadmium selenide nanocrystals can be deposited at room temperature and annealed at mild temperatures, opening up the possibility of using more flexible plastic foundations.

Another innovation that allowed the researchers to use flexible plastic was their choice of ligands, the chemical chains that extend from the nanocrystals' surfaces and helps facilitate conductivity as they are packed together into a film.

"There have been a lot of electron transport studies on cadmium selenide, but until recently we haven't been able to get good performance out of them," Kim said. "The new aspect of our research was that we used ligands that we can translate very easily onto the flexible plastic; other ligands are so caustic that the plastic actually melts."

Because the nanocrystals are dispersed in an ink-like liquid, multiple types of deposition techniques can be used to make circuits. In their study, the researchers used spincoating, where centrifugal force pulls a thin layer of the solution over a surface, but the nanocrystals could be applied through dipping, spraying or ink-jet printing as well.

On a flexible plastic sheet a bottom layer of electrodes was patterned using a shadow mask -- essentially a stencil -- to mark off one level of the circuit. The researchers then used the stencil to define small regions of conducting gold to make the electrical connections to upper levels that would form the circuit. An insulating aluminum oxide layer was introduced and a 30-nanometer layer of nanocrystals was coated from solution. Finally, electrodes on the top level were deposited through shadow masks to ultimately form the circuits.

"The more complex circuits are like buildings with multiple floors," Kagan said. "The gold acts like staircases that the electrons can use to travel between those floors."

Using this process, the researchers built three kinds of circuits to test the nanocrystals performance for circuit applications: an inverter, an amplifier and a ring oscillator.

"An inverter is the fundamental building block for more complex circuits," Lai said. "We can also show amplifiers, which amplify the signal amplitude in analog circuits, and ring oscillators, where 'on' and 'off' signals are properly propagating over multiple stages in digital circuits."

"And all of these circuits operate with a couple of volts," Kagan said. "If you want electronics for portable devices that are going to work with batteries, they have to operate at low voltage or they won't be useful."

With the combination of flexibility, relatively simple fabrication processes and low power requirements, these cadmium selenide nanocrystal circuits could pave the way for new kinds of devices and pervasive sensors, which could have biomedical or security applications.

"This research also opens up the possibility of using other kinds of nanocrystals, as we've shown the materials aspect is not a limitation any more," Kim said.

The research was supported by the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation.

New York cancels Sunday marathon amid outcry

NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg abruptly reversed course and canceled Sunday's marathon, a beloved annual race that had become a lightning rod for people frustrated by the disastrous aftermath of megastorm Sandy.

The decision on Friday came after a growing number of storm victims, some runners, and other politicians criticized Bloomberg's decision earlier in the week to go forward with the marathon, one of the world's most popular sporting events. They said the race, expected to draw more than 40,000 runners, could have diverted police and other resources from recovery efforts.

Bloomberg, hours after he repeated plans for the race to take place, issued a statement saying the event had become a "source of controversy and division" and would be scrubbed. The race will not be run again until next year, organizers said.

The decision removes what could have a been a dark spot on the mayor's legacy. Public opinion in the past few days had turned against the mayor, with growing numbers saying it was inappropriate to run the race when so many New Yorkers were suffering.

People angered by the marathon plans had set up online petitions calling for runners to boycott the 26.2-mile race, or to run backward from the starting line in protest.

The uproar grew after the New York Road Runners Club, the race organizer, set up generators in Central Park for communications and other operations. It said it had paid for those privately, not with public funds, but some complained that the equipment should have been donated to those without power, electricity or heat.

Some runners, hearing of the cancellation, expressed frustration.

"I have mixed emotions," said Christopher Miller, 34, of New Rochelle, New York, who would have been running his fourth New York City marathon. "Our hearts go out to people for their suffering, and also to the thousands who came from out of town and will leave without accomplishing what they set out to do months ago."

BAD RECEPTION FOR RUNNERS?

Another runner said the mayor should have stuck to the original decision, saying the race gives local businesses a boost and was set to raise large amounts for relief efforts.

"This was going to turn into a big recovery and healing event," said Usama Malik, 37, who works for a hedge fund. "I thought it was great that he (Bloomberg) made the decision to go on with it, to raise funds, to promote healing, and get people's minds off of everything else that's going on."

Sandy, which brought a record storm surge to coastal areas, killed at least 102 people after slamming into the U.S. Northeast on Monday. Forty-one died in New York City, about half of them in Staten Island, which was overrun by a wall of water.

The marathon starts in Staten Island and weaves through all five of the city's boroughs. Hundreds of thousands of people line the streets to watch the race.

Run every year since 1970, the marathon attracts professional and amateur runners, and is so popular that organizers run a lottery system to determine who can compete. The field features elite runners from around the globe, and is one of the six World Marathon Majors.

Among those who had been set to compete was Wilson Kipsang, the winner of this year's London Marathon, who had traveled 45 hours from his home in Kenya.

In announcing that the race had been called off, Bloomberg insisted it would not have diverted resources from the recovery effort. Hours earlier he had previously drawn parallels with the decision a decade ago not to cancel or postpone the marathon after the September 11, 2001 attacks.

However, he said, "we cannot allow a controversy over an athletic event - even one as meaningful as this - to distract attention away from all the critically important work that is being done to recover from the storm and get our city back on track."

Mary Wittenberg, the head of the New York Road Runners Club, said that as the controversy grew, she also was concerned about the reception runners may have received along the route.

At a news conference, Deputy Mayor Howard Wolfson said it had become clear that "something that every year brings joy and unity to this city had become divisive and painful, and this is a city that's had enough pain in the last week and I don't think we need to add more."

iPad Mini teardown reveals giant battery, tiny screws

17 hrs.

iFixit, a site that shows you how to fix your gadgets, has torn apart one of Apple's new iPad Mini tablets to see how it's assembled. Surprise: It's basically a giant battery. (This isn't a surprise.)

A large, single-cell battery takes up most of the space behind the tablet's 7.9-inch screen, similar to most other modern gadgets, especially those without swappable batteries. While the size of the processor, radios, and other pieces that make up gadgets have continued to be shrunk by clever engineers and improvements in manufacturing processes, batteries are still ruled by the maxim "the bigger, the better."

iFixit gives a thumbs-up to Apple for keeping the iPad Mini's Samsung-made?LCD panel separate from the protective glass that sits atop, as it makes it less expensive to repair if the glass (but not the screen) is damaged. On the other hand, panels that are bonded to the glass, like those in the iPhone 5, are thinner and marginally more "vibrant," as the pixels are closer to the eye. It should be assumed in the endless pursuit of shrinking sizes, the iPad Mini's display will be bonded like the iPhone 5 display within a generation or two.

Some of the connectors have gotten smaller in the iPad Mini, as well; iFixit called the iPad mini's internal screws the "some of the smallest screws we've ever seen."

Joel Johnson is a tech & science reporter who lives in Brooklyn.

Understand Helicopter Parenting Before You End ... - The Next Family

Browse >
Home / Featured, Parenting / Understand Helicopter Parenting Before You End Up Enrolling Your Kids in an Online School Program

By Brianna Meiers

In recent years, educational experts have noted the growing presence of ?helicopter parents,? or mothers and fathers who assume a high level of involvement in their child?s academic and professional affairs. While these parents defend their actions as healthy and indicative of a supportive family unit, many argue that helicoptering can have detrimental long-term consequences on children that extend far into adulthood. Helicopter parents earn this nickname from the way they seemingly ?hover? over their children throughout adolescence ? and in many cases, after their sons and daughters have left the house to pursue a college degree. Though the term carries negative connotations, many parents take pride in the characterization. ?I acknowledge that there is a very fine line that separates a parent who is ?involved? from one who is ?overinvolved,? self-described ?helicopter mom? Sally Rubenstone told US News & World Report. ?And, often, it is better to err on the side of the latter, rather than to not provide adequate guidance and support to kids who need it. ? A student who is a brilliant scientist or an amazing artist isn?t necessarily a super secretary.? The helicopter parent movement has other defenders, as well. In 2007, the National Survey of Student Engagement polled students at 24 American universities. According to The Washington Post, students with helicopter parents were more engaged with course materials and likelier to participate in ?deep learning activities? like post-class discussions with professors and independent research projects. ?Compared with their counterparts, children of helicopter parents were more satisfied with every aspect of their college experience, gained more in such areas as writing and critical thinking, and were more likely to talk with faculty and peers about substantive topics,? noted George D. Kuh, the survey?s director. However, a more recent study by researchers at New Hampshire?s Keene State College reveals that over-parenting can also have a highly negative impact on grown children. According to the report, college freshmen with helicopter parents (who comprised roughly 10 percent of their class) are less likely to be socially active with their peers ? and likelier to remain dependent on mom and dad. This study is bolstered by numerous studies reported in recent decades. An August 2012 article by The New York Times?profiled Dr. Carol Dweck, a social and developmental psychologist at Stanford University who has studied helicopter parenting in-depth. Her findings indicate that children who are not constantly supported are likelier to take on more difficult work; children who are routinely praised as ?smart,? on the other hand, will shy away from tough tasks for fear of losing their elite status. Though academia may seem more enjoyable to children of helicopter parents, these studies suggest that micromanaging from mom and dad can lead to adult children who struggle on their own. Today?s experts argue that the most effective parents support and nurture their children ? but also hold them accountable and teach them the value of autonomy. Independence is a crucial step toward adulthood, and college students who heavily rely on their parents for support and encouragement are setting a potentially disastrous precedent.

Brianna Meiers? discussion on the rise of helicopter parenting is a follow-up on ongoing conversations about appropriate parental involvement in child development and academic milestones.? According to Ms. Meiers, who writes primarily for those who want to pursue psychology degrees, helicopter parenting can have its upsides?but must be approached with caution if we want our children to grow into confident and independent adults.

The Effectiveness Of Creative TV Adverti... - Work On the Internet

The Neilsen???s Global Trust in Advertising Survey shows that TV is still relevant despite some reports that it???s losing some traction compared to the Internet advertising. The survey conducted from Aug. 31 up to September 2011 involved 28,000 online users in the Asia Pacific, Europe, Middle East Latin America, North America and Africa. In short, the data???and this is true in TV advertising in Australia as well???showed that half of the consumers surveyed say they consider the ads on TV as relevant compared to only 1 in 3 respondents who say online banner ads are relevant.

TV still king

This shows that when it comes to media, TV is still king. It must be conceded however that advertising spending on the Internet is rising but it doesn???t mean that it???s more effective, at least in the near future and that???s maybe more true in first world countries. When gauging consumer response in Africa and Pakistan for example, it shows that more than 6 in 10 people claim that the TV ads are relevant to their needs.
A bulk of global spending on advertising is still geared toward traditional marketing. In 2011, there was a seven percent growth in global ad allocation compared to 2010. That means companies are still looking at TV advertising in Australia as their bread and butter in reaching out to their target audience.

Measuring effectiveness

A Canadian experiment in 2010 showed just how effective TV advertisement is. The Television Bureau of Canada aired an ad for five weeks calling broccoli as a ???miracle food.??? After the series of ads, sales for the broccoli that month went up eight percent.

As some sectors have suggested, TV and the Internet should be seen as complementary platforms in your advertising campaign. One of the stronger edge of the Internet is people have control over the material they access, but that can also mean they can choose to overlook your ad. When embarking on television advertising in Australia, you can remind the consumers on your own terms.

Targeting audience

Another knock on TV ads compared to digital marketing is that you don???t really have a good grasp of the demographics and no way of generating feedback. But there are technologies now that allow corporations to have more control over when and how television advertising Australia is delivered to their target audience. For example, based on your market research, you can choose to download the commercial to your target audience to a cable box, for example. The concept has been done already like when pet food companies only showing their ads during a TV series about dogs, only this time these companies exert more control. Of course, the technology has yet to be tweaked and refined, but it???s only a matter of time when that happens.

Q&A: Sticking With Windows 7 - NYTimes.com

Q.

With Windows 8 here, how long will Microsoft still sell Windows 7?

A.

Microsoft?s latest edition of the Windows operating system has just landed, but Windows 7 is not going anywhere soon. As explained on Microsoft?s site, copies of Windows 7 will be available for retail purchase for another year, and PC manufacturers then have an additional year to keep selling Windows 7 installed on new computers.

The company has long-term technical support plans for Windows 7 too. According to the Microsoft Support Lifecycle page for Windows 7, mainstream support lasts through Jan. 13, 2015, and provides paid and free support, warranty claims, security patches and feature updates. Extended support, which includes feature updates and warranty claims, continues through Jan. 14, 2020.

Microsoft does allow plenty of transition time to new systems. Extended support for Windows XP, which arrived in 2001, is scheduled to finally end in April 2014.
